You might be surprised to find out that Manchester Airport, which serves 28 million passengers a year, is also home to a few frightening ghosts.
When you think of a place haunted by spirits of the past, usually a crumbling down castle or a menacing graveyard come to mind.
You hardly expect a very busy international airport to be inhabited by phantoms and ghosts.
But Manchester Airport appears to be just that, and it’s even been reported that it might be one of the most haunted airport in the world.
Before the airport became what we know to be the glorious place where 6am pints are not only allowed but expected it was an RAF airbase.
While the war broke out across Mainland Europe, what was then called RAF Ringway was used as a base to defend North West England from Nazi bombs.
Since then, travellers and employees have reported supernatural figures and unexplained phenomena within the airport walls – personally the most extraordinary thing that’s happened to me in the airport is paying up to the odds for a pint of Carlsberg.
Many people have reported coming face to face with a pilot wearing an RAF suit wandering aimlessly around Terminal 3, looking very confused as if something horrible happened to him.
It is believed this man was either shot down while engaging the enemy in combat or in a tragic accident. However, no one has ever been able to figure out exactly who this guy is.
According to archive documents dating back to the 1970s, some staff were so scared by the unexplained goings on they didn’t want to go out into Terminal 3 alone after dark. Over the years staff reported that they would often hear slamming doors, but when they went to investigate they would find empty rooms with the lights off. One worker claimed to have seen someone in a pilot’s hat wandering into the toilets at night, but when he went into the toilet no one was there and the motion-sensitive lights hadn’t come on – furthermore, no flights were due to arrive or depart at the time.
The next haunting character of the airport is The Night Watchman. He wears an airport security uniform, and was seen by a former member of the airport management crew. When he attempted to talk to the figure, he simply vanished into thin air.
The worker was so haunted by the events he resigned without any explanation, and he’s not the only one who has seen this figure.
It’s believed the watchman is a security guard from the ’60s who had tragically died of a heart attack on shift.
This guy has been known to cause trouble in the men’s bathroom near the international terminals, including following people into the bathroom and pounding on the door demanding for them to hurry up.
That’s not all, Manchester Airport is reported to be home to Roman Soldiers.
Rumour has it that figures of Roman soldiers in full battle gear have appeared on the runway before, looking so real that flights have had to wait until they it’s determined they’re not actual people, blocking the runway.
