A spectacular strawberry full moon will be lighting up the sky on Friday and you won’t want to miss it.
In lockdown, we’ve all become bakers and stargazers, who’d have thought it eh?! May was a big month for out of this world happenings, with the likes of the Blue Flower Moon, SpaceX launch, the 11-mile comet and the Starlink trail.
Well, this week’s spectacular space content is in the form of a Full Strawberry Moon, also known as the Rose Moon.
The moon will be lighting up the sky this Friday, June 5th, just after 8pm.
The Strawberry Moon gets its name from the month that wild strawberries begin to ripen, marking the beginning of summer months, and was named by early Native Americans. It’s also known as the Rose Moon and Hot Moon.
Around every 20 years, the Strawberry Moon coincides with the summer solstice, the longest day of the year with 17 hours of daylight. This year the summer solstice will be live streamed from Stonehenge.
The Strawberry Moon will be visible across Europe, Asia, Australia and Africa. Last year, star gazers may remember it turned a stunning shade of pink in some parts of the country.
It’s best to turn your lights off and allow your eyes 30 minutes to adjust to the night sky for optimum viewing of the moon.
This year the Full Strawberry Moon will officially peak at 8:12pm in the UK, on the evening of Friday June 5th, although it should be visible all evening – sunset is at 9:11pm on Friday.
