Blackpool Illuminations will be returning next week, in some good news for the festive period in the North West.

The seaside town’s famous illuminations will shine once more, bringing some much needed Christmas cheer in these bleak times.

Originally the illuminations were meant to run through Christmas and New Year for the first time ever, but the display had to be suspended during the national lockdown.

However, with lockdown ending the lights can return to Blackpool from next Wednesday night, December 2nd.

As well as the illuminations, there will also be new Christmas light displays around the town centre, as well as a 40ft tree in St John’s Square – the displays are set to run nightly until January 3rd.

Cllr Gillian Campbell, Cabinet Member for Tourism & Culture for Blackpool Council, said: “Months of restrictions have put a dampener on a large part of this year.

“The return of the Illuminations complemented by a significant investment in town centre lighting will definitely help lift the mood in the run-up to Christmas”.

This year, the illuminations display was created with the theme of Bring On The Light, and is a celebration of the heroic work the NHS, other key workers and certain outstanding individuals performed during the coronavirus pandemic.

Blackpool Tower remained lit during lockdown, and the iconic structure will also be illuminated throughout the extension to spread some festive cheer.
