Today is the 100th birthday of World War II hero Captain Tom Moore, the man who raised nearly £30 million for the NHS walking around his garden.
He embarked on a mission to walk 100 laps of his garden, with the initially modest target of raising £1,000, and won the hearts of the nation in the process.
To honour his achievements, he has been appointed an honorary colonel of the Army Foundation College, the BBC reports.
Captain Tom is set to be presented with a letter by Lt Col Thomas Miller, commanding officer of the 1st Battalion The Yorkshire Regiment, at his home, announcing the promotion.
The appointment was made by the Army’s Chief of the General Staff, Sir Mark Carleton-Smith, who said Captain Tom’s ‘mature wisdom, no-nonsense attitude and humour in adversity make him an inspirational role model to generations young and old’.
As well as the promotion, he’ll celebrate his birthday with thousands of cards from fans across the nation, including a special one from the Queen.
On top of that, Captain Tom was treated to a Battle of Britain Memorial Flight flypast of a Spitfire and a Hurricane organised by the RAF this morning.
