Martin Lewis has warned people to apply for the tax relief if they have worked form home this year due to the pandemic.

The finance expert says that anyone who has been forced to work from home can claim a full year’s tax relief worth up to £125.

He says you can claim it, even if you have only worked one day from home.

He tweeted: “If you’ve been required to work from home even for ONE DAY since 6 April… you can now legitimately claim tax relief for any extra costs for the WHOLE YEAR – worth £60 or £125,”

He further explained on a blog post on MoneySavingExpert.com: “When we first saw it, we couldn’t quite believe it meant you’d automatically get the whole tax year’s claim, regardless of how long you were at home for,”

He added that he triple checked, and even called HMRC, to make sure it was definitely true.

The money is designed to help with additional cost for working from home such as heating and broadband updates.

Your bosses are allowed to pay you an additional £6 a month, tax-free, to cover this.

To find out more and see if you are eligible to claim, head here

You will fill in a short survey to find out if you are eligible then be directed to the log into the Government Gateway if you are.

Once approved, your tax code for 2020/21 will be updated and you will receive the tax relief through your salary. This means that instead of being given the money directly you will benefit by paying less in tax.
