McDonald’s has issued an important new rule change customers will have to follow regarding face masks.

From last Friday (July 24th), face masks were made mandatory in supermarkets, and cafes and takeaway stores were also confirmed to be on this list.

Anyone who fails to comply with the latest rules risks facing a £100 fine.

Although wearing a face mask if you are dining in a restaurant is not required, when you are ordering or picking up takeaway food you must wear a face mask.

This, therefore, includes McDonald’s for those that are choosing the takeaway option. If you opt for dining in or drive-thru you are not required to wear a face mask.

A McDonald’s spokesperson told The Sun: “In line with Government guidance in England takeaway customers are required to wear a face-covering at all times while in our restaurants.

“Also in line with the guidance, dine-in customers can go directly to a table and order using the My McDonald’s App without a face covering, but should wear one if moving around the restaurant – for example using the self-order screens, ordering at the counter or if using the toilets.”

Several supermarkets  have said they will not be ‘challenging’ any customers who choose not to wear a face mask.

These statements had polar responses within the public, with some supporting the supermarket’s decision while others exclaimed that they will ‘lose their custom’.

This follows advice from The Association of Convenience Stores, which explains that supermarket workers should turn a ‘blind eye’ to those not wearing a mask due to concerns regarding the repercussions.

There has been a 40% rise in verbal and physical assaults made towards shopworkers throughout the lockdown.

Chief Executive of UK Hospitality, Kate Nicholls, has said that takeaway outlets have been left with ‘a very short time to properly brief staff, prepare signage and take steps to encourage compliance’.

Will you be heading out for some chicken nugs with a face mask on?
