Around 50 firefighters were called to a huge fire at Blackpool Central Pier in the early hours of this morning.

Lancashire Fire and Rescue Service said crews found a workshop and a ride about half way along the pier on fire just after 3am.

Incident commander Mark Winder said: “Some fantastic early intervention was done by the crews first on scene.

“Fortunately we had some of the conditions in our favour so we did not have a particularly strong wind and the tide was out, so we were able to tackle the fire below from the beach as well.”

South Shore Fire Station have tweeted their admiration of the ‘outstanding team work’ that ‘brought the fire swiftly under control’.

Lancashire Fire and Rescue have commended the ‘great work’ done by crews this morning in ‘getting on top of this quickly’.

They have also released some new photos taken by their drone of the promenade this morning, which show the full impact of the fire.
