If you fancy a bit of skiing but can’t afford to jet off to the Alps, then look no further than our very own Lake District.

Parts of the Lakes are currently resembling some of the world’s skiing hotspots, after a heavy snowfall.

The winter wonderland on the tops of Helvellyn in Cumbria has presented skiers and snowboarders with perfect conditions to hit the slopes, with thick snow blanketing the area.

The Lake District Ski Club, one of the country’s only ski resorts, has been taking advantage of the white stuff, with about 25 people hitting the slopes on Wednesday.

Located above Thirlmere and Glenridding, the ski club is perfectly located to get the best snow in the region, and has seen conditions varying from clear skies to wild hail storms this week.

The club has nine runs on-site, depending on weather conditions, with the biggest almost a mile long.

Club member Mike Sweeney wrote on the Lake District Ski Club Facebook group yesterday: “The tow will not run tomorrow but the weekend is looking good. We had excellent snow down the two main runs today – and some wild weather with a convective storm cell flinging 40mph-plus hail at skiers for a time.

“Around 25 folks enjoyed the sliding after the digging and between the derailment and weather ‘events’. The Presidents’ snow park is back too!”
