Popular Tenerife hotel on lockdown after tourist coronavirus case confirmed

A hotel in Tenerife is currently on lockdown after a tourist tested positive for coronavirus.

The Italian man, from the Lombardy region, is thought to have been staying at the hotel for seven days with his wife – he’s Spain’s third case of the virus.

The hotel, H10 Costa Adeje Palace in Adeje, is now in a state of quarantine, with about 1,000 guests trapped there – the resort is extremely popular with British tourists at this time of year.

Police are currently surrounding the building to make sure no one enters or leaves, as the guests and staff undergo tests, El Mundo reports.

After feeling unwell for a few days, the Italian tourist visited a health centre yesterday afternoon, and is currently quarantined at Nuestra Señora de Candelaria University Hospital in the capital of Tenerife, Santa Cruz.

The man, believed to be a doctor, was volunteering at a health centre on the island – another man and woman have also reportedly been transferred to hospital after being in contact with him.

Canary Islands president Angel Victor Torres said last night: “This afternoon the coronavirus protocol has been activated for an Italian tourist in the south of Tenerife.

“The result from the first test carried out in the Canaries is positive. Tomorrow new tests will take place in Madrid. The patient has been quarantined.”

As it stands nearly 80,000 people have contracted coronavirus, mostly in China, with 13 cases in the UK now after four more were confirmed on Sunday.
