The Hospice received £13,000 in donations from the public along with hundreds of cards and messages from around the country just last week.

His daughter, Natalie Morris, who is also a journalist, said while speaking to the Guardian that it was undeniable her father inspired others but he never viewed himself as a role model.

Natalie added: “I know now how difficult it can be being the only non-white face in newsroom meetings but he was doing it 20 years ago. It can’t have been easy but it’s a testament to his talent and his resilience how he broke down these barriers and paved the path for a new generation.”

His daughter Natalie announced her father’s passing on Twitter last week with a statement that read: “We lost our incredible dad on Saturday morning. He was more than a parent, he was also our best friend.

“We are utterly heartbroken, but so grateful for the time we had with him We will be offline with family for a while, but so appreciative of the lovely messages.”

She added: “We ask that rather than sending flowers people make a donation to Bury Hospice. We will forever appreciate the care, kindness and respect that the wonderful nurses provided for dad.”

Many people expressed their condolences via Twitter. One user wrote: “So sorry to hear this. He felt like a friend to so many with his smile. My Grandmother absolutely loved watching ‘her Tony’ before she passed away. Thoughts with you all”
