UK to be hit by thunderstorms today after hottest day of the year

The Met Office has issued a warning of thunderstorms and flooding over the next few days for much of the country.

The heatwave was a little too short-lived, and now the Met Office has issued a yellow warning for thunderstorms which will affect Greater Manchester and the North West.

Storms are expected almost all over the England and Scotland and part of Wales but temperatures are expected to stay relatively high.

Jason Kelly, Met Office meteorologist, said cooler temperatures this weekend are coming from a low pressure from the Atlantic Ocean.

“It’ll be breezy for all this weekend with heavy showers and longer spells of rain for most, though Sunday could brighten up across the southern half of the UK,” he said.

The weather warning is in place from 12pm Friday June 26th until 9am Saturday June 27th and they are expected to affect the North West. 

The weather warning states that flooding and disruption could occur in a few areas. 

The thunderstorms are forecast to start at around 2pm today in Manchester ending at around 7pm, followed by almost uninterrupted rain until Tuesday.

Unfortunately, there is also bad news for hay-fever suffers as despite the rain the pollen count still remains Very High today, High on Saturday and Medium on Sunday.

Met Office Chief Meteorologist Steve Willington, said: “Although many areas will enjoy dry and sunny weather over the next few days, the high temperatures will trigger thunderstorms which may cause flooding and disruption in a few places.

“On Friday thunderstorms could break out more widely across Scotland, England and Wales.

“Where thunderstorms do occur, they will develop quickly with intense rainfall of 30 to 50 mm in just a few hours with lightning an additional hazard.”

It comes after reports of thousands of people flocking to beaches yesterday, causing the government to issue a warning of beach closures.
