Marcus Rashford surprised a nine-year-old fan with a new PS5 and a letter applauding him for his ‘kindness’ after hearing of the youngster’s charitable efforts last week.
The Manchester United striker, who is famed for his tireless campaigning to end child poverty and hunger in the UK, caught wind of the fundraising Jacob Worthington had been doing on Twitter.
Jacob, from St Helen’s and a life-long United fan, was inspired by Rashford to raise funds for Fare Share, the charity ensuring no child goes hungry, as well as for a host of other local charities.

So of course, Jacob was stunned last week when a large parcel gifted from Rashford himself arrived at his doorstep.
In the parcel was a brand new PS5, a football game and a letter written by the footballer to Jacob, applauding him for his efforts.
In the letter, Rashford wrote: “We are not kind to be noticed. We are kind because it’s the right thing to do. It feels good to help others.

“I’ve been so proud reading stories on my Twitter about the work you have been doing, and how it has helped people in the last year.”
In the letter, Rashford added: “To show my appreciation, I wanted to make sure that I acknowledged these kind gestures with a gift.
“Not all gestures are going to be rewarded but know that you are appreciated, and every time you look at this gift remember how good it feels to look out for others.”

On the surprise gesture, Jacob’s dad, John Worthington told the Manchester Evening News: “I posted some pictures of Jacob with Marcus’s book and the next thing I know he got in touch asking if he wanted to send Jacob a gift how would he do that.
“I sent him our address thinking we would get a signed picture, but we couldn’t believe it when a big parcel arrived. At first we thought it was just a PS5 box with something else inside it, but then we saw it really had the console inside.
“He was made up, he was over the moon – he still is, he can’t believe he got it.”
Though Jacob isn’t the first youngster to receive a generous gift from Rashford – countless fund-raising kids have been sent similar packages from the footballer to reward them for their charitable efforts.
