The skies may be grey and the wind may be chilly, but the Met Office has come forward today with a glimmer of hope for the remainder of Greater Manchester’s summer.
Now, you’d be forgiven for thinking that summer is well and truly over – the July heatwave, which saw temperatures soar to highs of 30 degrees celsius – came to an abrupt end at the start of the month and was replaced by those all-too-familiar cold temperatures, grey clouds and drizzle.
However, forecasters revealed last week that temperatures could soar ‘above average’ at the end of the month and that, here in Greater Manchester, the weather will be making a vast improvement.

Last week, Met Office spokeswoman Nicola Maxey predicted ‘hotter spells’ to develop as we get into August, adding: “The start of the month is expected to remain changeable with temperatures most likely close to normal for the time of year or slightly below.
“During the second half of the month there is a tentative signal for more settled conditions to develop with high pressure becoming slightly more likely.”
Admittedly, the chances of a heatwave for our region in particular have been slim but, now, the Met Office has come forward once again with some actual, real life dates for when we can expect the heatwave. Very exciting, I know.
In their latest long-range forecast, the fortnight from Sunday August 22nd to Sunday September 5th is allegedly the one that will be providing the sunny goods. Just in time for the August bank holiday weekend!

It says: “Although confidence is very low through this period, a general trend towards more settled conditions is likely.
“Somewhat unsettled and changeable conditions are most likely to remain in place at the start of the period, with these looking to give way to more settled, drier conditions by the end.
“Temperatures are likely to be above average, with the potential for hotter weather later in the month.”
The BBC backed up the Met Office’s claims but also stressed that it is still ‘too early to tell.’
Get all your fingers crossed, we need some sun!
